Overview

I designed Spark, a goal-tracking app that uses habit stacking. Rather than relying on extrinsic methods, Spark empowers users to build long-term routines driven by intrinsic motivation.

Context

Based on research, 92% of New Year’s resolutions fail. We wanted to understand how people set goals and why they ultimately lose momentum.

Problem

I ran a 3-day diary study with 4 participants. By analyzing screen recordings, voice memos, and contextual interviews, I identified 2 meaningful insights:

People tend to set multiple, difficult goals
driven by extrinsic motivation.

The process of tracking goals feels like a chore.

Solution

Pairs goal with an existing habit, slotting the new action right before or after a routine users already follow so the goal becomes part of their day naturally.

Solution

Make goal tracking fun with engaging motion-based interaction.

Branding

I named it Spark because the real goal already lives inside the user. This fire metaphor drives every touchpoint across the app design, brand slogans.
